PART FOUR
SUPRIYA – ON THE RUN
CHAPTER 17 – UNDERGROUND
“Supriya, concentrate on getting your eyes to adjust to the darkness,” Rama coached. “You’ll be able to see if you just focus.”
I followed Rama blindly, lugging the limp body of Dr. Marriner through the damp, ancient tunnels underneath Cambridge. The bumps and clangs of the attackers tearing apart Dr. Marriner’s office were long behind us, and I breathed in a small sigh of relief at the thought that we had now triumphed over two incidents in one evening.
“Supriya, concentrate,” Rama reiterated as he pulled me back into the present. “Let’s stop. The attackers did not find the secret passageway. We would hear them if they had. We can rest here for a moment. Why don’t you lay Dr. Marriner down? You should be able to see very well in the dark if you focus your energy on learning how to do it. You have a sense of where the tunnel walls are around you. Now squint your eyes, and focus on trying to see them.”
I squinted as hard as I could to no avail. I fought the frustration and closed my eyes. Supriya, you can do this. You have this ability. You only need to bring it out in yourself. One, two, three… I took in a deep, meditative breath and then slowly opened my eyes.
A violet glow lit up the tunnel around me. Rough stone walls were softened by trickles of water, just like in the natural limestone caves I’d visited as a child.
“I can do it!” I exclaimed.
Rama smiled and leaned towards me, cupping my face in his hands and kissing my forehead. “I knew you could.”
I hugged him with excitement, and he squeezed me back. Suddenly, the moment seemed too intimate. I pulled away.
I looked down at Dr. Marriner with my newfound vision.
“What the hell?” I gasped.
Instead of the injured professor I’d carried into the tunnels, a handsome young man who looked only slightly older than me lay on the ground. The bullet holes remained in his shirt, but all traces of his violet Rakshasa blood were gone, as were his injuries.
Rama looked down at our ward. “Fascinating!” he exclaimed. “Well, he can shapeshift … to a certain degree, but there is something different about him. Vibhishana does not require clothing; his clothing is an extension of his form. Dr. Marriner appears to be some sort of hybrid.”
“How is that even possible?” I whispered.
“I honestly don’t know,” Rama replied. “I’ve never heard of such a thing. It does sound like it would be difficult, doesn’t it? But it would explain how he doesn’t know that he’s a Rakshasa.”
Dr. Marriner began to stir. Without opening his eyes, he moaned quietly, and then his fingers worked their way to where his gunshot wounds had been on his chest. He felt the bullet holes in his shirt and his smooth, healed skin underneath. His eyes popped open with a start, and as soon as he gasped in a loud breath, he scrambled to sit up.
